Burlesque Classes at The Kindergarten of Burlesque

Kid, you oughta be on STAGE!
Glamour, excitement, hilarity, sensuousness... What type of act would you do? How would you wear your hair? Use props? A classic? Gloves and a boa? A Bump n Grind? Cute n Funny? Hot!!!!!
Bring on the GLITTER!!!! Once you take Burlesque Lessons like the ones available at the Kindergarten of Burlesque, you'll never hear a song or see something fancy in a store again without associating what you could do with it in an act.
Burlesque really gets your creatives juices flowing! You will be at the craft store purchasing fringe, feathers, faux fur, satins, brocades, tassels, tulle, sequins and glitter and let's not forget the rhinestones! Or silk flowers you can sparkle up to wear in your hair. Be sure and pick up a glue gun in the process! You'll take a trip to the thrift store for a red bra or the perfect prom gown you can transform into something elegant or a gray suit to fit in your Pee Wee Herman Act. You'll dream of clever ways to make your "escape plan"- will it be snap tape? Velcro? Or a lovely jeweled tassel, attached to your zipper in the back to help you slink out of your gown. Will you twirl your tassels? Or use your pasties as a punchline? Oh the possibilities!
I believe the reason so many women adore burlesque is because it is limitless. If you can dream it, You CAN Build It!
As a burlesque performer of 7 years and now a founder and instructor for my own "Kindergarten of Burlesque" School, I have seen women blossom. Not everyone takes my class to perform burlesque; some take it to do a cabaret (non stripping) act or to learn to perform as they sing a song, or just to "Get over the hump and get on that stage!" Given the fact that I suffered with severe stage fright all the way through my burley career, I can help women JUST DO IT! I will get them to the stage if it kills us both. The hilarious thing is, it is usually the most terrified student that I have the hardest time with, that ends up really shining once they make it to the stage. They are then addicted to the rush of euphoria that comes with applause! Trust me kids, there is nothing like being appreciated for your talents by an audience!
How to begin... I hold four burlesque classes a year; one in the fall, two in the winter and one in the spring. My next class begins September 19th 2011 with the Classes on September 19th & 26th, October 3rd, 10th & 17th with the Class Recital on October 23, 2011 at Seattle's Jewel Box Theatre located inside the Rendezvous. The Kindergarten of Burlesque is held in my convenient NE Seattle "Kindergarten Room" inside a renovated Elementary School designed in the Mid Century by Paul Thiry, (head architect for the Seattle1962 World's Fair), with free parking and a safe environment. Our Studio is also the OldSchoolPinUps' Studio where we shoot PinUp Photos.

The class sits in the Bachelor Pad Set facing the Oriental Bar Set and in the space between the two, there is some great floor space to practice. Our KOB classes are five consecutive Monday nights, from 7 to 9:30 PM. The first night is all about getting to know you. I will give you a basic overview of Burlesque, we'll introduce ourselves, then Trixie Lane, The Queen of Shame, will get you on your feet and into a pair of Gloves and hand you a Feather Boa! Even if this is not the type of Burlesque you want for your act, it is still a great exercise to show you all about presentation, greeting your audience, and most importantly, Engaging your Audience! At that moment, you are beginning to perform for your fellow students, who you have just met. But you will get used to that, and even though it is harder to perform in front of a small group of your classmates, it is really important because you will get used to having your new friends watch you- so the stage performances will actually feel easier and more anonymous, especially with the lights in your eyes!

After that exercise you will meet a couple of KOB Alumni, to share with you their experiences with the stage. While the class is enjoying Q&A with the former students, my husband Lance and I work with each student, one at a time, to choose music for their acts or advise them what to look for. You can make you own choices of course, but I will have learned a lot about your possibilities by watching your burley exercise with the boa. Bringing your own personality to the stage is key to having a wonderful time while performing. It's all about Character development!

The second night of the class is all about costuming...how to make pasties and hair & makeup for the burlesque stage. Morgan Nonis of Truly Fallen Pasties is your costuming and pasties instructor. Trixie Lane will instruct you on hair and makeup tips for the burley stage. By the end of the night, you too will know how to get those fabulous glittery lips and how to tease your hair to prepare for the Art of the Tease! *Please note: Truly Fallen  is available for hire if you need help with your costuming.

The third night of the Class you will enjoy a performance by none other than Boom Boom L'Roux! You will perform your work in progress for your instructors and your classmates.your act for your classmates and instructors and receive helpful advice and ideas to get the most from your performance! Don't fret! You are all in the same boat! Trust us, we only have your best interests at heart. We'll offer you advice and tips and positive critique to send you home for another week of practicing your act.

The fourth night of the Class:
Tamara The Trapeze Lady! She is a phenomenal performer!! See her video at the bottom of the page. After a brief Q&A with Tamara, once again, you will perform your work in progress for your instructors and your classmates.your act for your classmates and instructors and receive helpful advice and ideas to get the most from your performance! You will also receive check lists for your burley packing and help choosing your stage name.

The fifth and final night of the class is Dress Rehearsal! You will have Madisun Avenue on hand with Trixie Lane to offer last minute help with your performance. You will arrive to the Kindergarten room as though it is show night. Coming all sparkly like the Burley STAR the you are. We even put up a Red Velvet Curtain! Then we will go through the show twice. This will really get your mojo going and gear you up for your actual stage performance!

The sixth night is the Recital and Graduation! Enjoy a real celebration as you take the burlesque stage for the very first time. Bask in YOUR Applause! AND GRADUATE FROM THE KINDERGARTEN OF BURLESQUE! An official Burlesque Star, possessing everything you need to go forth and multiply your talent.
